Local Places To Visit The Secret Bunker, deep underground in nearby woodland, would have been the home to the country’s leaders in the event of a nuclear war, and the award-winning Fisheries Museum at the harbour in Anstruther depicts the history of the fishing industry in the East Neuk of Fife. Combine a visit to the Fisheries Museum with a trip to the Isle of May Nature Reserve (weather permitting!) Fishing Villages Exploring the harbours and little vennels up the hill and between the houses in the East Neuk fishing villages of Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem and St Monans can provide hours of enjoyment, each of the villages having its own distinctive personality. Coastal Walks The Coastal Walk (from the Forth Bridge to St Andrews) skirts the edge of Cambo and provides pleasant (at times more arduous) walking and views not accessible from the road. One of the best local stretches, between Elie and Pittenweem, takes you past 2 ruined castles, the Old Kirk and abandoned salt works (with windmill) at St Monans and the old outdoor sea swimming pools at St Monans and Pittenweem. The pub in St Monans can provide a refreshing break and there is a regular bus service to take you back to your car (or Cambo). . Fine Art and Crafts Crail, only two miles from Cambo, is home to Crail Pottery, which is a delightful place to visit. Lobsters and crabs can be bought at the harbour and fresh fish from any of the fish sheds. The Jerdan Gallery has changing exhibitions and a new coffee shop on the way down to the harbour provides a good cup of coffee and view of the sea. Visit Cambo at the beginning of August and enjoy the atmosphere of Pittenweem Arts Festival, which attracts well-known artists and entertainers.
Beaches Walk to the renowned sandy beach at Kingsbarns, or, for a change visit one of the other magnificent sandy beaches nearby, such as Roome Bay in Crail, Elie, the East and West Sands in St. Andrews, or Kinshaldy (NE of Leuchars). Like the fishing villages, each beach has its own distinctive qualities and attractions.
Other Places To Visit Along with their gardens, there are several National Trust properties to visit in Fife and nearby and within an hour’s drive there are many more interesting historic houses and castles.
Visit the RSPB’s Vane Farm Conservation Centre near Kinross, then travel on to North Queensferry to have a ‘Diver’s Eye’ view of Europe’s largest collection of Sand Tiger sharks at Deep Sea World (under the Forth Railway Bridge), or travel a little farther and visit either Edinburgh Zoo, or Blair Drummond Safari Park (near Stirling), (you could combine this with a visit to Stirling Castle, Bannockburn (NTS), or the Wallace Monument).
